Base SAS 119

In the following SAS program, the input data files are sorted by the NAMES variable:
libname temp 'SAS-data-library';
data temp.sales;
merge temp.sales
work.receipt;
by names;
run;
Which one of the following results occurs when this program is submitted?
A. The program executes successfully and a temporary SAS data set is created.
B. The program executes successfully and a permanent SAS data set is created.
C. The program fails execution because the same SAS data set is referenced for both read and write operations.
D. The program fails execution because the SAS data sets on the MERGE statement are in two different libraries.

  1. The right answer is B. Both datasets sales and receipt are sorted by names variable which in turn is used to merge the two datasets. The resulting dataset is over-written on temp.sales dataset. As temp is a permanent library unlike work (which is temparory) option B is the right choice.

  4. Correct Answer is B
    1)temp is declared as a permanent lib so permanent dataset will be craeted
    2)same dataset can be read and write in a step
    3)work and perm datasets can be merged

    Ok, I understand this place is for commenting for the above question, but I couldn't find any good "forum" site regarding SAS base certificate preparation. so I thought maybe I can post a question that I had trouble with.

    Question1.
    The following program is submitted.
    data test;
    input name $ age;
    cards;
    John +35
    ;
    run;
    Which values are stored in the output data set?

    Answer:
    I thought it'd be "John" and "missing value"
    anyone else?

      Even I had the same question when I solved the sample questions on sas website. But then realised standard numeric value in sas are positive and negative numbers, scientific notations, decimal numbers. so +32 is numeric value.

    Any numbers with the sign + or - does as taken as a number , but if it comes with other special character then it does not read as number and will give you a missing value in output.

    Find out what are not valid sign for number.

    Did I answer you?

    Posted 9/9/2012: I want to thank from the bottom of my heart the author of this blog for the effort to set this up for the benefit of fellow SAS-ers.

    It was very useful to brush through these questions apart from other material available on the Net. More useful than the Base Prep Guide from SAS! A handful of the questions were from here.

    I got my Base Cert done! If there is similar blog for Advanced please post a link here.
